Delhi, 16 September (H.S.): The Central Government has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 by one day to 16th September 2025, following widespread complaints about technical glitches in the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Originally, the due date was 31st July 2025, but it had earlier been extended to 15th September 2025. Late Monday night, the Income Tax Department confirmed the further extension via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), citing the need for maintenance and utility changes. The e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from midnight to 2:30 AM on Tuesday to implement the required updates.
In a related post, the department highlighted that over 7.3 crore ITRs had been filed up to 15th September, breaking the previous year’s record of 7.28 crore filings. We sincerely thank taxpayers & professionals for their timely compliance, the department added.
Earlier, the tax department had issued guidelines to help taxpayers resolve browser-related access issues, but many continued to report difficulties despite following the suggested steps.
