Shubman Gill's historic double century puts England under pressure with India's massive score

Birmingham, July 4(HS): On the second day of the Test match between India and England, Shubman Gill achieved a historic double century, scoring 269 runs, marking his best performance in Test cricket and the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in England, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 runs. He also set a new record for the highest score by an Indian captain, breaking Virat Kohli’s previous record of 254 runs. India began the day with a score of 310/5 and finished their first innings at 587 runs.

A key partnership of 203 runs between Gill and Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 89, helped stabilize their innings before Washington Sundar contributed an important 42 runs in a 144-run partnership with Gill. England struggled in reply, ending the day at 77 for 3 in their first innings, still 510 runs behind.

Akashdeep bowled exceptionally well, taking two quick wickets, while Shoaib Bashir was England’s standout bowler with three wickets. England’s early batting was frail, with Duckett and Ollie Pope dismissed without scoring, and they found themselves at 25 for 3 before Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings with a partnership of 52 runs, leaving Root not out at the day’s close.
