India and Brazil can play a significant role in strengthening global food security: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan discussing with members of Brazil's agricultural trade in Sao Paulo.

New Delhi, April 16 (H.S.): Union Minister of Agriculture, Farmer Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, today held detailed discussions with 27 members of Brazil’s distinguished agricultural business community in São Paulo. This dialogue was organized under the vision of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and the policy of promoting global cooperation.

A government spokesperson reported that this conversation involved in-depth discussions on possibilities for enhancing agricultural trade between India and Brazil, exchanging better production techniques, adopting advanced food processing technologies, collaborating in the production of biofuels and bioenergy, technical innovations, and integrating supply chains.

Union Agriculture Minister Chouhan expressed confidence that the collaborative efforts of India and Brazil could play a crucial role in strengthening global food security. He praised Brazil’s extensive use of machinery in agriculture, especially in cotton and soybean harvesting, and expressed hope for cooperation in these areas.

The president of Brazil’s Chamber of Commerce mentioned that the current agricultural trade between India and Brazil stands at 2-3 billion dollars, while its potential can reach up to 15-20 billion dollars. Brazil primarily exports fertilizers, soybeans, cereal crops, sugar, meat, and vegetables.

Brazil’s former Minister of Agriculture noted that about 50 years ago, Brazil imported 30% of its total food, whereas today the country exports agricultural goods worth 500 billion dollars. Shivraj Singh Chouhan extended an invitation to Brazil’s agricultural community to visit India, stating that it would be an opportunity to further deepen mutual experiences and technical partnerships.
