
New York, 15 October (H.S.): India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-2028 term, marking the nation’s seventh tenure on the principal UN body. The UNHRC announced the results of the election, which was held on Tuesday, on the social media platform X. India’s new three-year term is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.In the election, the UN General Assembly selected 14 member states for the council.
Alongside India, the newly elected members are Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.Following the announcement, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, stated that the election victory reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
In a post on social media, he affirmed that India will make every possible effort to advance these goals during its term and expressed his gratitude to all delegations for their support.The UNHRC, a key 47-member body within the United Nations, is tasked with the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
India was first elected as a founding member when the General Assembly established the Council in 2006.
