
Delhi, 13 October (H.S.): The domestic stock market experienced significant selling pressure in early trading on Monday, with benchmark indices opening lower in response to weak global signals. The market initiated the day with a downturn, and despite a subsequent tussle between buyers and sellers that caused volatility, both the Sensex and Nifty continued to trade in negative territory.
After the first hour of trading, the BSE Sensex was down 0.37%, while the NSE Nifty had fallen by 0.36%. The broader market sentiment was overwhelmingly bearish, as selling pressure dominated buying interest.
Key Movers and Market Breadth
Among the major stocks, some bucked the negative trend. Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, Maruti Suzuki, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel, and Bajaj Finance were trading higher, with gains ranging from 0.42% to 1.38%. Conversely, laggards included Tata Motors, ONGC, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Tata Steel, and JSW Steel, which saw their shares decline by 0.89% to 1.36%.
The overall market breadth was weak, with 2,132 stocks being actively traded. Of these, 1,447 were trading in the red, while only 685 advanced. The weakness was also visible in the indices, with 24 of the 30 Sensex stocks and 38 of the 50 Nifty stocks trading with losses.Index PerformanceThe BSE Sensex opened at 82,049.16, marking a steep fall of 451.66 points.
Following the opening, the index saw some recovery, touching an intraday high of 82,329.50, but it could not sustain the momentum and fell back due to persistent selling. At approximately 10:15 AM, the Sensex was trading at 82,198.04, down by 302.78 points.Similarly, the NSE Nifty started the session at 25,177.30, down 108.05 points. It hit an intraday high of 25,241.95 but remained under pressure. Around 10:15 AM, the Nifty was trading at 25,193.10, a loss of 92.25 points.
This performance contrasts with the previous week’s close. On Friday, the Sensex had ended at 82,500.82, up by 328.72 points (0.40%), while the Nifty had closed at 25,285.35, gaining 103.55 points (0.41%).
