Kathmandu (Nepal), September 12 (HS): In the midst of an unprecedented political crisis, Nepal’s high-level meeting aimed at reaching a consensus on forming an interim government and dissolving parliament has been rescheduled. Originally slated for 9 a.m. on Friday, the crucial talks will now take place at 2 p.m., the Office of the President announced, citing extended preparations.
Presidential advisor Dr. Suresh Chalise confirmed the postponement, explaining that further consultations with various stakeholders were needed before moving forward. The delay followed a marathon meeting that ran from 10 p.m. Thursday until 3 a.m. Friday, which ended without consensus on either the dissolution of parliament or the structure of the interim government. Reports indicated agreement on the proposal to appoint Sushila Karki as head of the interim administration, though political parties continue to object to dissolving parliament.
Curfew Partially Lifted in Capital
After days of violent unrest, a temporary easing of curfew restrictions allowed limited public movement in parts of Kathmandu on Friday. The Nepal Army permitted citizens to leave their homes between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. for essential activities, bringing noticeable crowds back to local markets. A second relaxation window is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Outside of these hours, strict restrictions remain in place. According to the Directorate of Public Relations and Information, gatherings of more than five people are banned from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, medical staff, security personnel, government employees, journalists, ambulances, and essential workers are allowed to travel with identification.
The military further clarified that the night curfew will resume at 7 p.m. Friday and remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, with the possibility of extension depending on the security situation.
The curfew measures follow two days of violent protests led by Gen Z activists on September 8 and 9, which left at least 34 people dead and over 1,000 injured.
