Ireland faces setback with Young and Campher unavailable for ODIs

All-rounder Curtis Campher

New Delhi, May 21 (H.S.): Before the ODI series starting on May 21 in Dublin against West Indies, the Ireland team has suffered a major blow. Fast bowler Craig Young and all-rounder Curtis Campher have been ruled out of the series due to injuries. Young and Campher’s places have been filled by younger players. Jordan Neil has been included in place of Young, and wicketkeeper-batter Stephen Doheny has been added in place of Campher.

Craig Young sustained his injury in a match of the Inter-Provincial Cup, where he was unable to complete his ninth over while playing for the North West Warriors. He took 1 wicket for 49 runs in 8.5 overs and dismissed Barry McCarthy on the last ball.

Meanwhile, Curtis Campher’s injury occurred recently during net practice. He suffered a fracture in his finger while batting, which has ruled him out of the series.

Ireland’s chief selector Andrew White said, We now have a long list of injured players, including Mark Adair, Graham Hume, Craig Young, Fionn Hand, and Curtis Campher. This series will test the depth of our players, but it is also an opportunity for the youngsters to prove themselves against a world-class team.

Sterling stated—this is an opportunity for younger players

Captain Paul Stirling also viewed this positively. He said, Injuries happen in sports, but this will give new players a chance earlier than expected. More players gaining experience will benefit us for the future.

Stephen Doheny recently scored a century for Munster Reds against Northern Knights in a domestic ODI tournament. He has experience of 11 ODIs and 3 T20 internationals.

19-year-old Jordan Neil has become the fourth uncapped player included for this series. Previously, Cade Carmichael, Thomas Mayes, and Liam McCarthy have also been included in the team.

All three ODI matches will be held in Dublin on May 21, 23, and 25. After that, the T20 series will take place on June 12, 14, and 15 in Brady.
