Jones' Unbeaten 86 Steers England to Dominant World Cup Semifinal Berth

VISAKHAPATNAM, 26 October (H.S.): England secured a commanding eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in their final group stage encounter of the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup on Sunday. An exceptional performance with both bat and ball saw England comfortably chase down their target, setting up a semifinal clash against South Africa.

Chasing a modest target of 169, England’s innings was anchored by a superb, unbeaten 86 from Amy Jones. She orchestrated the chase masterfully, first building a solid 75-run opening stand with Tammy Beaumont, who contributed a brisk 40 from 38 balls.

Following Beaumont’s departure, Jones partnered with Heather Knight (33) for a decisive 83-run second-wicket partnership that took the game completely away from New Zealand. England reached 172 for 2 in just 29.2 overs, underscoring their dominance.

For New Zealand, Lea Tahuhu and Sophie Devine were the only successful bowlers, claiming one wicket each.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat, New Zealand’s batting lineup faltered against a disciplined English attack. Despite promising starts from Georgia Plimmer (43), Amelia Kerr (35), and Sophie Devine (23), the team failed to build momentum and were bowled out for 168 in 38.2 overs.

Once the key batters were dismissed, a steady collapse ensued as they could not complete their full quota of 50 overs.England’s bowlers were clinical throughout the innings. Linsey Smith was the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets.

She was ably supported by captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey, who took two wickets apiece, while Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone each chipped in with one.England will now travel to Guwahati to face South Africa in the semifinals on October 29.
