Kathmandu airport security tightens for ex-King's welcome

Kathmandu has enforced extensive security measures following support for former King Gyanendra Shah's appearance.

Kathmandu, March 9 (HS): Kathmandu has enforced extensive security measures following support for former King Gyanendra Shah’s appearance.

Multiple routes have been closed to traffic, and heightened security protocols at Kathmandu Airport prohibit entry without a ticket.

Former king Gyanendra Shah is returning to Kathmandu after a considerable absence and plans to hold a roadshow from the airport to his residence, attracting thousands of supporters who have already gathered. Security forces, including personnel from the Nepal Police and Armed Police, are positioned along the route to ensure safety, and a curfew is in place around the airport, leading to significant traffic disruptions.

SSP Somendra Singh Rathore reported that public access to the airport is entirely restricted, with five hundred armed officers deployed from the main gate to the internal terminal. DIG Dinesh Acharya stated riot control police are deployed at intersections, led by DSP, to maintain order and prevent disturbances.
