Kolkata, 12 March (H.S.): West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu recorded his statement with Kolkata Police three days ago in connection with the March 1 incident at Jadavpur University.

During his visit to a program at Jadavpur University, Bratya Basu faced protests from students demanding student body elections. Allegedly, the students surrounded his car, raised slogans, and threw bricks at his vehicle, injuring him. Two students, Indranuj Roy and Abhinav Basu, were also reportedly injured and admitted to the hospital.

The incident created a political uproar in West Bengal and eventually reached the Calcutta High Court. Injured student Indranuj had emailed a complaint to Kolkata Police, but students allege that no action was taken. When the case was brought before the High Court, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed the police to file an FIR based on Indranuj’s complaint.

Indranuj had named Bratya Basu, his driver, Jadavpur University professor Omprakash Mishra, and several Trinamool Congress workers in his complaint, seeking legal action against them.

Following the incident, the Student Federation of India (SFI), affiliated with the CPM, shared a photo on social media that allegedly showed a student lying under Bratya Basu’s car. This led the police to summon former SFI state secretary Srijan Bhattacharya for questioning.

Additionally, police also searched the residence of Omprakash Mishra, a professor associated with Trinamool-backed teacher’s organization Webcupa, as he was reportedly present at the scene on the day of the incident.

Kolkata Police has already recorded statements from multiple individuals regarding the Jadavpur University incident. A section of students claims that Indranuj and Abhinav were injured after being hit by Bratya Basu’s car. The police continue to investigate the case from all angles. It has now been revealed that Basu’s statement was recorded on March 8.
