Liverpool Edges Everton 2-1 in Tense Merseyside Derby to Maintain Perfect Premier League Start

Liverpool, September 21(HS):

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over local rivals Everton in the 247th Merseyside derby played at Anfield on Saturday, extending their winning streak to five matches in the Premier League. The reigning champions remain unassailable at the top of the table but showed familiar signs of vulnerability despite an early two-goal cushion.

The Reds took command early with Ryan Gravenberch opening the scoring in the 10th minute following a precise looped cross from Mohamed Salah. The Dutch midfielder, not noted for prolific scoring last season, showcased composure and technique, allowing the ball to bounce before hooking it elegantly past Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Liverpool’s momentum continued as France international Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a clinical finish through Pickford’s legs after a slick team move involving Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

However, Liverpool’s dominance wavered in the second half, allowing Everton to mount a spirited comeback. Idrissa Gueye’s powerful strike in the 58th minute reignited Everton’s hopes, bringing the score to 2-1 and setting up a tense finish. Despite Everton’s increased pressure and sustained attempts, including strong performances by loan signing Jack Grealish, they could not break through Liverpool’s defense.

The victory prolongs a frustrating record for Everton manager David Moyes, who has now failed to win at Anfield in 23 attempts, including nine consecutive defeats. Moyes will, however, find solace in his team’s resilient second-half display.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed cautious satisfaction, acknowledging the team’s slow second-half start and the challenges posed by a congested fixture schedule. Meanwhile, Ekitike praised the match’s intensity, noting the team’s need to push forward continually.

Liverpool’s win reinforces their status as Premier League front-runners, even as the team continues to fine-tune its cohesion following a significant summer recruitment drive.
