Chennai, 8 March (H.S.): The Madras High Court has issued a significant directive to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, limiting its authority to interfere with rituals and practices conducted outside temple premises.
The HR&CE department is responsible for administering and managing Hindu temples and their properties in Tamil Nadu. However, there have been instances where the department’s interference in temple rituals and practices has been questioned.
The Madras High Court’s directive aims to establish a clear boundary between the HR&CE’s administrative role and the religious freedoms of individuals and communities. The court has instructed the department to refrain from interfering with rituals and practices that take place outside temple premises.
This ruling is expected to have significant implications for the management of Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu. It is likely to provide clarity on the HR&CE’s jurisdiction and ensure that devotees can continue to practice their faith without undue interference.
