Derbyshire, March 8 (HS): English county club Derbyshire has reappointed experienced batsman Wayne Madsen as its captain. He will lead the team in this summer’s County Championship.
41-year-old Madsen accepted the role just a month before the start of the season, he was given this responsibility after David Lloyd’s decision to step down from captaincy. Earlier, Madsen has been the captain of Derbyshire from 2012 to 2016 and in his very first season of captaincy, the team got promotion from Division Two.
Derbyshire head coach Mickey Arthur expressed happiness over handing over the captaincy to Madsen. He said in a statement issued by the club, Wayne has always been a great leader and he is also very popular in the dressing room. I am very happy that he will lead our team in 2025. His experience is invaluable – he has also achieved promotion as captain before and I look forward to seeing the team’s performance under his leadership.
Arthur also said that Madsen sets an example with his hard work and professional attitude on the field.
Derbyshire had a disappointing 2024 season, where the team finished bottom of Division Two. However, Madsen performed brilliantly on a personal level and was the team’s best batsman, scoring 1005 runs (average 50.25). This was the seventh time in 12 seasons that he scored more than 1000 runs.
He has so far scored 14,601 first-class runs for Derbyshire, taking him to ninth place in the club’s list of top 10 run-scorers.
Reacting to getting the captaincy, Madsen said, It is a great honor for me to take over the captaincy of Derbyshire again. I know what it means to represent this wonderful county and its supporters, and I am proud to lead the team. He praised former captain David Lloyd and said that he strengthened the unity and fighting spirit of the team, which he wants to take forward.
He said, I am excited to lead this team and we will perform better under the guidance of Mickey Arthur. We have talented players and strong characters, and we are committed to give success to our supporters this season.
