ANKARA, Turkey , 28 October (H.S.): A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Turkey late on Monday(October 27, 2025),toppling several buildings that had been previously weakened by an earlier tremor. Officials confirmed that search and rescue operations are underway, though no casualties have been reported.
The earthquake occurred at 22:48 local time, with its epicenter located in the town of Sindirgi in Balikesir province at a relatively shallow depth of approximately six kilometers, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management agency (AFAD). The tremors were felt across a wide region, including in Istanbul and the provinces of Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that at least three unoccupied buildings and a two-story shop collapsed in Sindirgi following the quake. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed that all relevant government units have been mobilized to conduct thorough investigations and damage assessments.
Authorities have activated Turkey’s Emergency Response Plan, with AFAD, gendarmerie, and police units surveying the affected areas. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the region’s significant seismic activity, following a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake in February 2023 that resulted in extensive loss of life and widespread destruction.
