Mamata Banerjee Firm on Rejecting New Waqf Law, to Hold Crucial Meeting with Imams on Wednesday

Kolkata, 12 April (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has firmly declared that the state will not accept the newly amended Waqf law passed by the Central government under any circumstances. Amid ongoing protests across the state, Banerjee is set to hold a crucial meeting with imams, muezzins, and representatives of the Muslim community at Netaji Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, April 16.

Sources indicate that during the meeting, the Chief Minister is expected to convey a clear strategic message to the minority community regarding peaceful opposition to the Central government’s decision. She is likely to urge the community to continue their protest through democratic means and avoid any form of aggression.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has already voiced strong opposition to the amendment in Parliament, accusing the Centre of passing the law unilaterally without proper consultation and hurting religious sentiments. Mamata Banerjee has reiterated that the adverse effects of the amended law will not be allowed to take root in Bengal.

On Friday, large-scale protests were witnessed across several districts of the state, some of which led to tense situations. The TMC has appealed to the public to maintain peace and not fall prey to any provocation by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The party emphasized that while it will continue to oppose the Centre’s policies, all protests must remain non-violent. TMC leaders have alleged that the BJP aims to incite communal tension over the issue and urged the people of Bengal to remain vigilant.

The TMC leadership has called on the Muslim community to place their trust in Mamata Banerjee and wait for the outcome of the April 16 meeting, where she is expected to chart the future course of action. Political observers believe that the meeting could become a significant turning point in the minority politics of West Bengal in the coming days.
