
Chennai, 6 May (H.S.): A man was arrested by the cybercrime police in Kumbakonam on Monday for allegedly threatening to upload obscene photographs of a woman online.
According to police reports, the accused, identified as D Neelamegan (38), had obtained private photographs of the victim and was using them to blackmail her. He reportedly threatened to share the images on social media platforms if his demands were not met.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld, filed a complaint with the Kumbakonam cybercrime unit detailing the harassment and threats she had been receiving. Acting swiftly on the complaint, police launched an investigation and were able to trace and apprehend the accused.
Police have registered a case against the man under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws. He is currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of reporting cyber harassment and online abuse promptly. They have also urged the public to be cautious about sharing personal photos and information online and to be aware of the potential for misuse.
