Man killed over political rivalry in UP

06 April (HS): Authorities reported on Sunday that a man died in Lucknow after

being shot in an alleged electoral political dispute. The incident occurred in Sopahiya Pyuli

village, where family members of current village head Seema Awasthi allegedly

fired on Rajan Awasthi, the son of the former village head. One of the suspects, Mrityunjay Awasthi, was

apprehended after falling from his motorcycle while drunk. Police were able to recover his pistol. An FIR was filed against Seema’s husband,

Sachiv Awasthi, as well as Mrityunjay and Shivam Awasthi. Rajan’s death has sparked tensions in the village;

as he was due to marry next month. The

Hardi Station House Officer has informed that murder charges would be added to

the FIR awaiting the results of the post-mortem. In response to the event, BJP MLA Sureshwar

Singh postponed Sunday’s bike rally commemorating the Yogi government’s

anniversary.
