London, Aug 12 (HS) : The Manchester Originals finally broke their winless run this season, securing a 10‑run victory over London Spirit in a high‑energy clash at Lord’s on Monday night.
The Originals’ top order fired in unison, with all of the first four batters crossing 20 runs to set up a season joint‑high total of 163/6. Skipper Jos Buttler anchored the innings with a controlled 46, while Phil Salt added a brisk 31. Henrich Klaasen chipped in a steady 24, but the late fireworks came from teenager Ben McKinney, who blasted 29 from just 12 balls, peppered with three sixes and two boundaries.
Warner’s Fight in Vain
Chasing 164, Spirit’s hopes revolved around an in‑form David Warner, whose classy 71 not only kept the game alive but also elevated him to the top of this year’s run charts in the men’s competition. Partnered by skipper Kane Williamson, Warner took the score to 75, but the asking rate kept climbing.
Sonny Baker set the tone with a disciplined new‑ball spell, conceding a mere four runs from his first 10 deliveries and keeping Warner on edge. Wickets at crucial junctures — including Warner’s dismissal by Josh Tongue (3/29) — stalled the chase. Despite late hitting from Ashton Turner and Jamie Overton (19 off 7 balls), Spirit fell short at 153/6.
Player of the Match – Sonny Baker
Baker, named Meerkat Match Hero, reflected on the win:
“It’s a big result against a quality side. My focus was to bowl quick, get swing with the new ball, and put pressure on the left‑handers. Bowling to Warner is never easy, so I’m delighted to have played a part in this win.”
Score Summary:
Manchester Originals — 163/6 (Buttler 46; Overton 2/26, Stone 2/27)
London Spirit — 153/6 (Warner 71; Tongue 3/29)
Result: Manchester Originals won by 10 runs.
