New Delhi, June 2(HS): The domestic stock market experienced minor declines on Monday, closing down after a day of fluctuations. Initially, trading commenced weakly, with notable selling pressure leading to a decline of significant proportions in the first half hour. A subsequent rally by buyers managed to push the stock market briefly into positive territory before selling pressure re-emerged, ultimately causing the market to fall back. The Sensex ended down by 0.09 percent, while the Nifty dropped by 0.14 percent.

While the stock market overall faced pressure, there was continued buying in sectors such as real estate, FMCG, and PSU banks, while the automobile, capital goods, healthcare, and public sector indices saw gains. Conversely, the IT, metal, and oil and gas sectors faced persistent selling pressure, along with declines in consumer durables and tech indices. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices closed up, with gains of 0.58 percent and 0.36 percent respectively. Thus, despite the weak market, midcap and smallcap stocks contributed to a wealth increase of over ₹1 lakh crore for investors, bringing the BSE’s total market capitalization to ₹445.24 lakh crore.

During trading, a total of 4,287 stocks were active on the BSE, with 2,130 closing higher and 1,991 lower. Out of 30 Sensex stocks, 12 closed in profit while 18 declined; on the Nifty, 20 gained, and 30 lost. The sensex opened at 81,214.42 points, falling to a low of 80,654.26 points due to early selling but managed to recover to 81,474.26 points before closing at 81,373.75 points, down by 77.26 points. Similarly, the Nifty started at 24,669.70 points and dipped to 24,526.15 points before recovering to close at 24,716.60 points, down by 34.10 points.

Among major gainers were Adani Ports (up 2.46%), Mahindra and Mahindra (up 1.65%), and Tata Consumer Products (up 1.27%). In contrast, Hero MotoCorp declined by 1.79%, followed by Tech Mahindra and JSW Steel. Overall, the market showcased a day filled with volatility, reflecting ongoing investor sentiment and sector-specific dynamics.
