Markets End Lower for 7th Straight Session; Sensex, Nifty Slip Despite Investor Gains

New Delhi, September 29 (HS): The domestic equity markets closed in the red on Monday, marking their seventh consecutive session of decline. Despite beginning the day on a positive note and staging an early rally, heavy selling pressure from foreign investors, weakness in the IT sector, and a 1.3% rise in the India Volatility Index dragged both Sensex and Nifty lower by the end of trade.The BSE Sensex opened 162.31 points higher at 80,588.77, touched an intraday high of 80,851.38 and slipped more than 600 points to a low of 80,248.84, before finally ending 61.52 points down at 80,364.94.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty opened with a 73.85-point jump at 24,728.55, climbed to 24,791.30, and later fell sharply to 24,606.20. It eventually closed 19.80 points lower at 24,634.90.Sectoral and Market TrendsOil & gas, PSU banks, and public-sector enterprises witnessed continued buying interest. Real estate, metals, FMCG, consumer durables, energy, and pharmaceuticals also ended with gains.

On the other hand, IT, defense, capital goods, auto, and tech stocks dragged the benchmarks.The broader markets showed mixed trends. The BSE Midcap Index advanced 0.34%, while the Smallcap Index declined 0.17%.

Investor Wealth Gain

Despite the benchmark indices slipping, investors’ wealth rose significantly, driven by strong buying in midcap stocks. The combined market capitalization of BSE-listed firms rose to ₹451.73 lakh crore (provisional) from ₹450.55 lakh crore on Friday, giving investors a net gain of around ₹1.18 lakh crore in a single trading session.

Market Breadth

At the BSE, 4,377 stocks were actively traded. Of these, 1,919 ended higher, 2,274 declined, and 184 remained unchanged. On the NSE, out of 2,794 traded shares, 1,335 closed in the green, while 1,459 ended in the red.

Among Sensex constituents, 15 shares advanced while 15 declined, while in the Nifty 50, 24 stocks closed higher against 26 losers.

Top Gainers and Losers

Top Gainers (Sensex): Titan Company (+2.22%), Wipro (+1.65%), SBI (+1.61%), IndusInd Bank (+1.49%), and Eternal (+1.20%).

Top Losers (Sensex): Axis Bank (-1.89%), Maruti Suzuki (-1.85%), Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (-1.48%), Larsen & Toubro (-1.10%), and HDFC Life (-1.02%).
