New Delhi, May 1 (HS): The season for Punjab Kings’ star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is almost over in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). Captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed during the toss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai on Wednesday that Maxwell has suffered a fracture in his finger. He stated that the team has not yet made any decision regarding his replacement.
Shreyas said, It’s quite unfortunate that Maxwell has fractured his finger. To be honest, we have not yet made any decision regarding a replacement. But our team’s mindset is strong, and we have players who can come in and have the ability to win matches.
Australian all-rounder and Maxwell’s teammate Marcus Stoinis also confirmed that Maxwell’s injury is serious. He mentioned that the injury occurred during practice before the last match, but Maxwell considered it to be minor at that time.
Stoinis said, He thought it was a minor injury, but after the scan, the situation turned out to be worse. It seems that his season is over.
Maxwell’s performance this season has been disappointing. He has scored only 48 runs in seven matches. In contrast, in the previous season with the same franchise, he scored 552 runs and made a significant impact. Additionally, he had outstanding performances for RCB in 2021 and 2023.
Punjab Kings’ head coach Ricky Ponting mentioned after the match that the team is looking for replacements, but finding foreign options is challenging due to the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
He said, We are also considering Indian players. Some young players have trained with us and we will take them to Dharamshala. It’s possible that one of them may get a chance.
Ponting also clarified that the team will make a final decision on the replacement before the 12th match. He stated that until they reach Dharamshala, some players like Hardy and Bartlett could get a chance based on conditions.
Currently, Punjab Kings have only 6 foreign players available, and they fielded only 3 foreign players in the match against Chennai. Young Indian player Suryansh Shetty was given an opportunity in the playing eleven in place of Maxwell.
