Guwahati, 04 March (HS): Assam Minister Ashok Singhal’s statement targeting the Miya community has triggered a political storm.

During a public gathering, Singhal remarked, This time, we will not allow Miya to set up a shop. We will give it to our boys. What is the role of a Miya in our festival? Our boys are not allowed during Eid.

Opposition leaders and activists have condemned the remarks, calling them inflammatory and divisive.

The controversy has reignited debates on communal harmony and business inclusivity, especially during festivals.

Reacting strongly, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislators demanded a breach of privilege motion against Singhal in the Assam Assembly on Tuesday.

Protesting on the Assembly floor, AIUDF MLAs pressed their demand, forcing Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn the session for 20 minutes amid the uproar.
