Mohan Jung Thapa arrested in America for showing black flag during Oli's US visit

Nepalese citizen Mohan Jung Thapa arrested in America

Kathmandu, March 2 (HS): US security personnel have arrested a Nepali man and deported him to Nepal on charges of showing black flag, protesting and not allowing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s program to take place during his US visit in September last year.

According to the information provided by the Nepali Embassy in Washington DC, US, American green card holder Mohan Jung Thapa has been arrested from Pennsylvania Airport on Saturday night. US security officials have informed the Nepali Embassy about this and have also informed about deporting the arrested Thapa to Nepal.

Mohan Jung Thapa, who was the head of the US chapter of the National Independent Party led by Ravi Lamichhane, has been accused of showing black flag to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who went to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York in the second week of September, and protesting outside the hotel where he was staying. In view of the protest against the arrest of Ravi Lamichhane, the program of Prime Minister Oli to address the Nepali diaspora also had to be canceled. At that time, US security officials had suggested the Nepalese Embassy to cancel the program, citing widespread opposition to Prime Minister Oli in this program, after which the Nepalese Embassy canceled Oli’s program.

At the same time, Nepal filed a complaint against Mohan Jung Thapa and demanded legal action. Five months after this complaint of the embassy, US security officials have arrested Thapa.

According to the information given by the Nepalese Embassy in Washington DC, the arrested Mohan Jung Thapa is currently kept in the detention center in Philadelphia. The embassy has issued a statement saying that after completing the necessary legal process, the accused Thapa will soon be deported to Nepal.
