Kolkata, 3 May (H.S.): West Bengal Police have arrested another accused in connection with the brutal killing of a father and son during the recent violence in Murshidabad district. The arrest was made on Saturday morning in the Farakka area, officials confirmed.
The accused, identified as Nurul Islam, had been absconding since the incident, and police had been on an intensive manhunt to track him down. Police officers said that Nurul Islam was produced before the court on Saturday, and with his arrest, the total number of accused apprehended in this particular murder case has now risen to eight. Notably, the prime accused in the case had already been arrested earlier.
The violence erupted in Murshidabad following protests against the Waqf Act, resulting in widespread clashes. During the unrest, three people, including the father and son duo, lost their lives, triggering a massive security crackdown.
According to police sources, more than 274 people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the riots and killings.
“We have made significant progress, but the search for other accused individuals continues. We are determined to bring everyone responsible to justice,” a senior police officer said.
The state administration has also ramped up security in sensitive areas to prevent any further escalation. With fresh arrests and ongoing raids, the police are confident of restoring normalcy and ensuring accountability for the violence that shook Murshidabad.
