Kathmandu, October 14(HS): Nepal’s three major parties are preparing to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the formation of the interim government. Dev Raj Ghimire, the Speaker of the dissolved House, convened a meeting of the parties on Tuesday and urged them to submit a single, consolidated petition rather than separate filings.
The meeting was attended by Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, CPN-UML leader and former minister Padma Aryal, and National Assembly member and Supreme Court advocate Khim Lal Devkota from the Maoist camp.
Separately, the Nepal Bar Association is also preparing to move the court with its own petition.Dr. Mahat said the Nepali Congress has completed preparations to legally contest both the dissolution and the interim government’s decision-making.
Aryal stated that the interim government acted beyond the constitutional mandate by dissolving the legislature, and added that the cabinet’s own formation would also be challenged for alleged non-compliance with constitutional provisions.Devkota signaled alignment on mounting a coordinated legal challenge.
Regular hearings at the Supreme Court resume Tuesday after a 35-day suspension, following arson that damaged parts of the court complex during recent “Gen Z” protests. The registry has announced it will accept writ petitions from today.
