Netherlands to Hold General Election on October 29 After Government Collapse

The Hague, Oct 29 (HS): The Netherlands will go to the polls on October 29 for a general election, following the collapse of the country’s governing coalition earlier this year.

The election was triggered after the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, withdrew from the ruling coalition in June 2025 over disagreements regarding immigration and asylum policy. Wilders had proposed stringent asylum measures, including the use of military patrols along national borders — a move that drew strong opposition from his coalition partners.

The four-party coalition, formed after the PVV emerged as the largest party in the November 2023 elections, struggled with persistent ideological rifts and instability throughout its tenure. The government’s collapse has once again thrown Dutch politics into uncertainty, with voters now set to determine the country’s next course amid debates over migration, economy, and climate policy.
