London, March 17 (H.S.): Newcastle United ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought by defeating current champions Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final (also known as the Carabao Cup) at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak gave Newcastle a historic victory, creating a celebratory atmosphere for the Geordie fans.

It was also a special day for Newcastle’s local hero Dan Burn, who gave his team the lead with a powerful header in the 45th minute. With the tremendous support of Newcastle fans, the team scored their second goal just seven minutes later when Swedish striker Alexander Isak beat Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher to score.

However, Liverpool, currently at the top of the Premier League, tried to make a comeback in stoppage time with a goal from Italy’s Federico Chiesa, but it was too late, and the victory belonged to Newcastle.

Two years ago, Newcastle faced defeat against Manchester United in the League Cup final, but this time they changed their fortune. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães stated before lifting the trophy, This victory is for our fans. When I came here, I said I wanted to make my name in history, and now we can say we are champions.

On the other hand, Liverpool looked lackluster in this match and seemed completely exhausted after losing in a penalty shootout to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Liverpool’s star player Mohamed Salah could not take a shot or create any chances despite playing the full 90 minutes for the first time.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot had his first Wembley final, which he would not want to remember. He admitted, It was a disappointing performance. Newcastle did what they wanted, and they deserved to win.

Newcastle Showed Dominance from the Start

Newcastle appeared more aggressive at the beginning of the match, with Sandro Tonali taking a sharp shot near the post. Liverpool’s team was trying to finish the first half at 0-0, but in the 45th minute, Dan Burn scored a magnificent header from Kieran Trippier’s corner, causing the Newcastle fans to erupt with joy.

Right at the start of the second half, Newcastle applied pressure again, and in the 52nd minute, Isak converted Jacob Murphy’s header into a goal. This was Isak’s 23rd goal, and he has now become Newcastle’s new superstar.

Liverpool attempted a comeback in the final moments, with a powerful shot from Curtis Jones being saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope. However, Chiesa tried to revive Liverpool’s hopes by scoring during stoppage time, but ultimately, Newcastle secured the victory.

With this win, Newcastle claimed their first domestic trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1955 by defeating Manchester City, ending years of pain at Wembley Stadium.
