NHRC Takes Cognizance of Ashoka University Professor's Arrest

New Delhi, May 21 (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Director General of Police of Haryana regarding the arrest and custody of Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad from Ashoka University in Haryana, and has requested a detailed report on the matter within a week.

The Commission has stated that, at first glance, it appears that the accusations against the professor constitute a violation of human rights and freedoms. The Commission has taken suo motu cognizance and issued the notice accordingly. It has requested a detailed report from the Director General of Police of Haryana within a week.

Professor Mahmudabad is accused of spreading religious discord through an article and making objectionable comments about women officers in the army. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court today regarding a controversial comment he made on Operation Sindoor. The court directed him to cooperate in the investigation and not to make any further statements regarding the related post.
