
Delhi, 2 May (H.S.): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized the necessity for democratic nations to unite against terrorism, which he described as a significant global threat that transcends national boundaries and jeopardizes peaceful societies. He called for a collaborative response rooted in mutual trust and respect for international norms to combat terrorism effectively and uphold democratic values. These comments were made during a meeting with the Japanese Parliamentary Delegation led by Nukaga Fukushiro at Parliament House.
Mr. Fukushiro condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed Japan’s support for India’s counter-terrorism efforts. Shri Birla acknowledged Japan’s solidarity and highlighted the importance of India-Japan friendship for global peace and stability. He noted their partnership in multilateral forums like QUAD, G20, and the International Solar Alliance as vital for addressing shared concerns.
Additionally, he reflected on the long-standing civilizational ties, including a shared Buddhist heritage, and expressed joy over the increasing number of Japanese tourists visiting India, enhancing people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Om Birla expressed his appreciation for Japan’s proposal to create opportunities for over 50,000 skilled Indian professionals in various sectors within Japan, as well as for providing more opportunities for Indian students. He thanked Japan for its commitment to infrastructure development in India’s North East region. Reflecting on India’s 75-year journey since adopting its Constitution,Om Birla emphasized its crucial role in the nation’s progress, highlighting the significant socio-economic changes that prioritize public welfare. He pointed to legislation such as the ‘Disability Rights Act-2016’ and ‘Transgender Persons Act, 2019,’ which aim to integrate marginalized sections of society. He also noted the passing of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,’ designed to ensure women’s representation in legislative bodies.
Further, he mentioned the Indian Parliament’s strides in utilizing Digital Technology and AI to enhance transparency and efficiency, expressing a desire to share these advancements with Japan’s Parliament.
The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, along with several MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
