New Delhi, September 13 (HS): The Income Tax Department on Saturday announced that more than 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 have already been filed ahead of the deadline. The last date to file returns without penalty is September 15.
In an update shared on social media platform X, the department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals, stating, “Thank you taxpayers and tax experts who helped us cross the 6 crore ITR milestone — and the numbers are still rising.”
The department has deployed 24×7 support services to assist taxpayers with return filing, tax payments, and other related services through its helpdesk via calls, live chat, WebEx sessions, and official X (Twitter) handles.
The CBDT has also urged those who are yet to file their returns for AY 2025-26 (income earned in FY 2024-25) to do so promptly, avoiding a last-minute rush. “Let’s keep up this momentum,” it added.
It may be recalled that in May, the government extended the deadline for filing ITRs — from July 31 to September 15, 2025 — for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and entities not subject to mandatory audit.
