Pahalgam Terror Attack: Relations with Pakistan Almost Severed, Indus Water Treaty Suspended

New Delhi, April 23 (H). Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has decided to take strict action against Pakistan. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, halt the issuance of SAARC visas to Pakistani citizens, and close the Attari-Wagah border. Additionally, it has also decided to limit the functions of the Pakistani High Commission.

After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen, India has resolved to take stringent action against Pakistan. A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security was held this evening under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The committee condemned the attack in the strongest terms and expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims. The Foreign Secretary stated that, following this attack, many governments worldwide have expressed support and solidarity with India, reflecting a spirit of zero tolerance towards terrorism.

The meeting provided information regarding the Pakistani links of this terrorist attack. Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, Vikram Misri, briefed the press on the decisions of the CCS. According to this, the Indus Water Treaty will be suspended with immediate effect until Pakistan demonstrates a credible and lasting commitment to cease its support for cross-border terrorism. The Attari check post will be closed immediately, and those who have crossed with valid approvals will be given a chance to return before May 1, 2025. Pakistani citizens will not be allowed to enter India under the SAARC visa exemption scheme. Visas that were previously issued have been canceled, and Pakistani citizens currently in India must leave the country within 48 hours. The defense, naval, and air advisors at the Pakistani High Commission have been declared persona non grata and have been ordered to leave India within a week. India will also recall its defense/naval/air advisors from Islamabad. Furthermore, the total number of diplomatic missions will be reduced from the current 55 to 30, effective until May 1, 2025.

The Cabinet Committee on Security reviewed the security situation and directed all forces to maintain high alertness. It has been assured that the perpetrators of the attack will be brought to justice, and their sponsors will also be held accountable. India will continue its actions against terrorists.
