Kathmandu, 11 February (HS): A party supporting the government itself has decided to oppose an ordinance of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government, due to which it seems difficult to pass it from the Parliament.
After the meeting of the Parliamentary Party of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), President Upendra Yadav said that it has been decided not to support one of the six land related ordinances of the government in any house of Parliament. He said that a decision will be taken during the discussion in the House regarding the five other ordinances. Upendra Yadav says that the land related ordinance brought for the personal benefit of some of his close businessmen and party leaders, challenging the decision of the Supreme Court, cannot be supported under any circumstances.
After this decision of JSP, it is difficult for this ordinance to be passed by the National Assembly. The government does not even have a simple majority in the upper house of Parliament, while the government has a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives. According to the constitutional provisions of Nepal, any ordinance should be passed by a simple majority in both the houses of Parliament within 60 days. If the ordinance is not passed in any one house, it will be rejected.
Now the Oli government needs the support of 31 MPs for a majority in the 60-member National Assembly, while the government has only 28 MPs at the moment. Similarly, the opposition alliance also has 29 MPs. JSP has only 3 MPs, which is decisive for the majority at this time.
