New Delhi- Jammu and Kashmir has seen a steady rollout of urban housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U), with more than 14,000 houses completed and delivered to beneficiaries over the past three years, official data tabled in Parliament shows.
The information was provided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said the Centre sanctioned 5,215 houses for Jammu and Kashmir between 2022–23 and 2024–25, while 19,375 units were completed and handed over during the same period.
According to the ministry’s data, 266 houses were sanctioned in 2022–23, followed by 3,677 units in 2023–24 and 1,272 units in 2024–25. On the delivery front, 6,622 houses were completed in 2022–23, 3,626 in 2023–24 and 9,127 units in 2024–25, indicating an upward trend in completion.
The ministry clarified that PMAY-U and its revamped version, PMAY-U 2.0, are demand-driven schemes without fixed targets. States and Union Territories are tasked with identifying beneficiaries, preparing proposals and implementing projects, while the Centre provides financial assistance after approvals by the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee.
Launched in 2015, PMAY-U aims to provide all-weather pucca houses with basic civic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries, mainly from the Economically Weaker Section and Lower Income Group categories. In September 2024, the Centre launched PMAY-U 2.0 to extend housing support to one crore additional beneficiaries nationwide over the next five years.
At the national level, more than 122.28 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 so far, with over 97 lakh units completed and delivered as of January 22, 2026, the ministry informed Parliament.
