
Guwahati, 29 April (HS): In the case of theft of goods worth ₹60 to 90 lakh in Basishtha police station area, the police took swift action and recovered goods worth crores including the vehicle within 24 hours and arrested three accused.
According to the information given by the spokesperson of Assam Police on Tuesday, Handrajit Rajbanshi of Shivshakti Roadways had lodged an FIR in Basishtha police station on April 28, in which he told that he had hired a six-wheeler vehicle (AS 13 AC 5860) through a broker to transport goods from Nalapara to Sribhumi. But later the driver, vehicle owner and broker switched off their mobile phones and denied responsibility.
Following the complaint, the Basistha police took prompt action and recovered the vehicle in an abandoned condition from Sonapur (near NH) and arrested the vehicle owner Abdus Salam (32, Barpeta).
On the information provided by the arrested accused, the police raided Satlabari in the Hajo police station area and arrested another accused Rahim Badshah (43) and recovered a huge amount of stolen goods from his possession. The recovered goods include Dyna Roof Tin Sheets of various sizes (about eight tonnes), two sacks of loose cotton (40 kg each), four cartons of Shikar brand (50 small cartons, 24 packets each), one carton of 15 containers of Rajnigandha, one carton of 52 small cartons of Tulsi, one big carton of 60 small Rajnigandha cartons and two plastic sacks containing 10,000 paper cups.
Besides, the police also arrested a third accused Inus Ali (28) from Salmari Char and seized more stolen goods from a godown at Bangalpara under Hajo police station area, which included 35 cartons of incense sticks, four cartons of Rajnigandha, 13 cartons of paper cups, 13 cartons of tissue rolls, a sack full of buckets and a carton of Tulsi brand products.
Police said a detailed investigation into the case was underway and more arrests were possible.
