Srinagar- Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Monday set firm commissioning deadlines for three major hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, directing that the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul and 624 MW Kiru projects be commissioned by December 2026, while the 540 MW Kwar project is to be completed by March 2028.
The Minister, who was on a two-day visit to the Union Territory, issued the directions after inspecting the projects and reviewing their progress with senior officials and contractors.
According to an official handout, Manohar Lal inspected all three projects being executed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited. These include the Pakal Dul, Kiru and Kwar hydroelectric projects in the Chenab Valley.
During the review meeting, the Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC briefed the Minister in detail on the current status, timelines and key challenges of the under-construction projects. Following the presentation, the Minister directed the agencies involved to ensure strict adherence to the revised deadlines.
“The Minister issued directions to commission the Pakal Dul and Kiru projects by December 2026 and the Kwar project by March 2028,” the handout said.
The Power Minister also interacted with local residents and workers at various project sites, listening to their concerns and feedback. He appreciated engineers, staff and workers for executing the projects under difficult terrain and weather conditions and encouraged them to maintain momentum to meet the targets.
Manohar Lal concluded his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. On the first day of his tour, he reviewed progress on other key hydropower projects, including the Salal, Sawalkot and Ratle projects.
Late on Sunday, the Minister visited NHPC’s Dulhasti Power Station in Kishtwar, where he was received by senior officials of NHPC and Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited.
The three projects together are expected to add more than 2,100 MW of hydropower capacity, strengthening the region’s power generation base and contributing to energy security in Jammu and Kashmir.
