Pritismita Bhoi Shatters World Record to Win Weightlifting Gold at Asian Youth Games

MANAMA, 27 October (H.S.): India’s young weightlifter Pritismita Bhoi created history at the Asian Youth Games in Manama on Sunday, securing a gold medal in the girls’ 44kg category with a new youth world record.

The 16-year-old set the world youth record in the clean & jerk by lifting 92 kilograms. Combined with her 66 kg lift in the snatch, her total of 158 kg earned her the top spot on the podium. Bhoi set the new record on her third clean & jerk attempt, having previously lifted 87 kg and 90 kg.

In the snatch, she had one successful lift at 66 kg but failed in her attempts at 68 kg and 69 kg. China’s Wu Jihong claimed the silver medal with a total of 156 kg, while Vietnam’s Dao Thi Yen won bronze with 141 kg.

In the boys’ 60kg category, 17-year-old Maharajan Arumugapandian of India won a silver medal. He lifted a total of 256 kg, with 114 kg in the snatch and 142 kg in the clean & jerk. The gold medal went to Chen Shunfa of China, who lifted a total of 261 kg.

With these impressive performances, India’s overall medal tally at the games has reached 23, which includes 3 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals.Other ResultsIn athletics, the girls’ medley relay team, consisting of Edwina Jason, Tannu, Avinash Shaurya, and Bhumika Nehate, won a silver medal.

The boys’ medley relay team finished in fifth place.In boxing, Khushi Chand (46kg), Aahna Sharma (50kg), Chandrika Pujari (54kg), and Anshika (80+kg) all won their respective bouts to advance in the tournament.
