RG Kar Case: Former Tala Police Station OC’s SIM Remains Crucial, Won’t Be Returned Yet, Says CBI

Kolkata, 24 February (H.S.):

A major update has emerged in the investigation of the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case. On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a progress report in the Sealdah court, stating that an additional chargesheet will be filed soon. The agency also made it clear that the SIM card of former Tala police station OC Abhijit Mandal will not be returned at this time, as it remains crucial to the investigation.

The CBI had seized Abhijit Mandal’s SIM card after arresting him. Though he is currently out on bail, his family had filed a petition in court seeking the return of the SIM card. However, the CBI argued in court that the SIM card is one of the most critical pieces of evidence in the case and, therefore, cannot be returned yet.

The CBI’s investigation into this high-profile case has been controversial from the beginning. The victim’s family has repeatedly questioned the agency’s alleged inaction. In its initial chargesheet, the CBI named only Sanjay Roy as the accused, based on which the Sealdah court sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, this raised concerns over the fate of other suspects in the case.

Earlier, the CBI had arrested former RG Kar hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh and former Tala police station OC Abhijit Mandal. However, due to delays in filing the chargesheet, both were granted bail. While Sandeep Ghosh remains in jail due to other cases, Abhijit Mandal has been released.

In its report submitted to the court, the CBI mentioned that an additional chargesheet will be filed soon, which will clarify whether any evidence related to the case was tampered with or destroyed.

The agency also claimed that the victim’s family has been kept informed about the progress of the investigation and that reports have been submitted to the court at regular intervals. However, the family maintains that they have not been given complete information about the actual status of the probe. All eyes are now on the upcoming chargesheet, which is expected to reveal more details about others involved in this horrific crime.
