New Delhi, May 7 (H.S.): Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Rohit made a total of 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57 in 67 Test matches during his career. He achieved this with a batting average of 40.57 and a strike rate of 57.05. He has 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries to his name in Test cricket. He had scored a century in his very first match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 2013 during his debut.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on Instagram. He shared a photo of the Team India Test cap on his Instagram story and wrote, Hello, I just want to let you know that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been a great honor for me to represent my country in the white jersey. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.

In the early stages of his career, Rohit Sharma played as a middle-order batsman, but he could not secure his place in the team due to fluctuating performances. However, after being given the responsibility of opening in 2019, he proved himself in the new role and played several outstanding innings.

The year 2021 was the best year of Rohit Sharma’s Test career, in which he scored 906 runs at an average of 47.68. This was one of the most stable and successful periods of his Test career.

Drop in Form in 2024, No Opportunities in Final Match

In 2024, Rohit Sharma’s bat was silent as he scored runs at an average of only 24.76 over the entire year. After playing in the fourth Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he was dropped from the final Test. India lost the series 1-3, and with the fourth Test, Rohit’s Test career also came to an end.

Rohit Sharma’s decision comes before the five-match Test series against England starting in June. It is believed that the Indian team will now take the field in this series with a new captain and potential opening options.
