Sanju Samson Returns to Kerala Ranji Side, Opens New Red-Ball Chapter

Sanju Samson

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, 14 October (H.S.): India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s return to the Ranji Trophy has injected fresh excitement and optimism into Kerala cricket, marking his comeback to red-ball action after nearly a year. Kerala open their 2025–26 Ranji Trophy campaign against Maharashtra from October 15, with Samson’s inclusion the chief talking point ahead of the season opener.Samson last played first-class cricket against Karnataka last year.

Having helmed Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and featured regularly in India’s T20 set-up, he had largely focused on white-ball formats, but will now don Kerala whites again. Kerala will be led by Mohammed Azharuddeen, with Baba Aparajith as vice-captain. Team management has afforded Samson a free role, mindful of his prospects for upcoming national selection. The comeback carries emotional weight.

Samson’s stand-off with the Kerala Cricket Association last year—sparked by his omission from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad—dominated headlines. His father alleged bias, while MP Shashi Tharoor publicly raised concerns; the KCA defended its decision, citing indiscipline. The episode affected both Samson and Kerala’s domestic setup.

A strong Kerala Cricket League showing helped thaw relations, and his Ranji return is being viewed as a fresh start, signalling rapprochement between talent and management.Samson is set to be with Kerala at the start of the season before joining the India squad for the India–Australia T20 series beginning October 29. He is widely expected to feature in the opener against Maharashtra.

Kerala’s think-tank believes Samson’s presence will lift confidence and energy in the dressing room. After reaching the final last season, the side now has its sights set on going one better and clinching the trophy.
