SC denies Nepal's amnesty for Maoist Vice President Sapkota

Maoist leader Agni Sapkota

Kathmandu, June 5 (H.S.): The Supreme Court annulled the Nepal government’s amnesty decision for Agni Sapkota, Vice President of the Maoist party accused of murder, and ordered the prosecution to proceed. The court ruled that the government’s amnesty in serious criminal matters was invalid, enabling Sapkota to face trial for murdering Arjun Lama during the Maoist-led conflict.

Nearly 20 years after the murder, Lama’s parents filed a case against Sapkota. Following the formation of a Maoist government led by Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, a decision was made to halt the murder case. A lawsuit challenging this decision was filed in the Supreme Court, which delivered its verdict on Wednesday.
