SC to hear Pegasus spyware case in April

New Delhi, March 07 (HS): The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on the Pegasus spyware case. A bench headed by Justice Suryakant ordered the next hearing on this matter on April 22. During the hearing today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Central Government said that this matter has been listed after a long time, so this matter should be heard in April.

The Supreme Court had constituted a team of experts on this matter on October 27, 2021. This team was headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Raveendran.

The expert committee had said that its report should not be published. The committee was given 29 phones, out of which five were suspected to have malware. However, it could not be decided whether it was Pegasus. The committee had submitted its report in three parts. Two of these reports are from the technical committee, while one report was from Justice Raveendran. There are some confidential things in the report. There is also some personal information. The Supreme Court said that the report of the technical committee will not be made public.

Justice Raveendran’s report recommends making new laws against cyber attacks and illegal surveillance on common citizens. The court had constituted a three-member technical committee to assist this investigation committee. The technical committee includes Professor Dr. Naveen Kumar Chaudhary, Dean of National Forensic Science University, Gandhinagar, Professor Prabhaharan P of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuram Kerala and Professor Dr. Ashwin Anil Gumashte of IIT Bombay.
