
New Delhi, September 15 (HS): After a week of sustained gains, Indian equity benchmarks closed lower on Monday, snapping the recent rally. The market remained range-bound and volatile throughout the day, with buying and selling pressure keeping indices on a roller-coaster ride. At the close, the Sensex slipped 0.15 percent while the Nifty dropped 0.18 percent.
Despite the decline in benchmark indices, strong action in midcap and smallcap counters added wealth for investors. Market capitalization of BSE-listed companies rose by nearly ₹1.44 lakh crore, taking the total valuation to ₹460.16 lakh crore (provisional), up from ₹458.72 lakh crore recorded on Friday.
Sectoral Performance
-Buying interest was visible in energy, realty, and defence stocks, while banking, capital goods, FMCG, oil & gas, and public sector indices also ended higher.
-IT, pharma, and auto shares faced heavy selling pressure. Tech, metal, and consumer durables indices also closed in the red.
-In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index jumped 0.40 percent, while the Smallcap index surged 0.66 percent, reflecting robust broader participation.
Market Breadth
On the BSE, 4,389 stocks witnessed active trading. Of these, 2,340 ended higher, 1,880 declined, and 169 were unchanged. On NSE, 2,822 stocks were traded, with 1,539 closing in the green and 1,283 in the red. Among the benchmark constituents, 10 of the 30 Sensex stocks advanced while 20 declined. In the Nifty basket, 15 out of 50 stocks gained while 35 ended weaker.
Index Movement
The Sensex opened mildly higher at 81,925.51, rallied to 81,998.51 at the day’s peak, and slipped to 81,744.70 at the day’s low before finally closing 118.96 points lower at 81,785.74.
The Nifty began at 25,118.90, touched a high of 25,138.45, dipped to 25,048.75, and finally settled 44.80 points down at 25,069.20.
