
New Delhi, September 26 (HS): Indian equity markets opened on a weak note on Friday, with both the Sensex and Nifty under pressure in the early session. After a cautious opening, the indices witnessed volatile movement as buyers and sellers tussled for dominance, leaving benchmark indices in the red.
By the end of the first trading hour, the Sensex was down 0.46 percent while the Nifty declined 0.45 percent.
In the frontline pack, stocks such as Tata Motors, Larsen & Toubro, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki, and JSW Steel posted gains ranging between 0.40 percent and 1.93 percent. Conversely, shares of Infosys, HCL Technologies, Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra, and Power Grid Corporation slipped between 0.86 percent and 1.59 percent.At that stage, as many as 2,515 stocks were actively traded in the market.
Of these, 528 were in positive territory, while 1,987 declined. In the Sensex basket of 30 stocks, 7 remained in the green while 23 languished in losses. Similarly, Nifty saw only 10 gainers against 40 losers.
Indices at Opening Bell
The BSE Sensex opened 203.67 points lower at 80,956.01. It briefly climbed to 81,033.09 in early trade on buying support, but persistent selling dragged it down. By 10:15 a.m., the Sensex was trading 372.17 points lower at 80,787.51.The NSE Nifty opened 72.30 points lower at 24,818.55. It briefly recovered, rising about 50 points to 24,868.60, but gains quickly faded as selling pressure mounted. By 10:15 a.m., the index was down 112.25 points at 24,778.60.

On Thursday, markets had also ended in the red. The Sensex dropped 555.95 points, or 0.68 percent, to settle at 81,159.68, while the Nifty closed 166.05 points, or 0.66 percent, lower at 24,890.85.
