SIR Protests Force Repeated Adjournments In LS

New Delhi- Relentless protests by the Opposition over the demand for a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls forced the Lok Sabha to adjourn for the day on Tuesday, despite the government maintaining that it was ready for a discussion.

After two earlier adjournments, the House reassembled at 2 pm but sloganeering by Opposition members continued. Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, appealed to MPs to allow proceedings to continue, noting that the government had already expressed willingness to discuss the SIR exercise being carried out in nine states and three Union territories. He also pointed out that the revision process had concluded in Bihar and its results were visible.

The disruptions meant the House could not take up the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was listed for consideration and passage.

During a brief Zero Hour that lasted about 10 minutes, several papers and committee reports were tabled before protests intensified again. Members of the Congress and other Opposition parties shouted slogans demanding an immediate debate on the SIR exercise.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged members to maintain decorum and allow all parties to be heard. He said disruptions by a handful of MPs were unfair to others and added that electoral setbacks should not translate into anger inside the House. Taking a swipe at the Congress, he remarked that the party was losing the confidence of the people and reminded them that even former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had lost elections.

As the uproar continued, the House was adjourned within minutes, first till noon and later till 2 pm, before finally being adjourned for the day. Monday, the opening day of the Winter Session, had also seen repeated adjournments due to Opposition protests.
