Southeast Asia sees COVID-19 surge; Bollywood actress Shilpa Shirodkar and cricketer Travis Head test positive

Covid

New Delhi, 19 May (H.S.): Regions in Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand, are facing a notable surge in COVID-19 cases. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shirodkar and Sunrisers Hyderabad star batsman Travis Head are among those who have tested positive.

Singapore has recorded a 28 percent increase in COVID cases over the past year, reaching 14,200 cases as of May 3, 2025, while health officials in Hong Kong report a new wave of infections, with the positivity rate rising from 1.7% in March to 11.4%, resulting in 81 cases and 30 deaths, predominantly among the elderly with underlying health conditions. The circulating strains in Singapore include ‘LF.7’ and ‘NB.1.8’, both subvariants of JN.1 lineage.

In China, COVID cases have surged to peak levels seen last summer, with the weekly positivity rate doubling recently. Thailand experiences a rise in cases following the Songkran Festival, reporting two cluster outbreaks. Travel plans to these affected areas should be reconsidered, taking into account factors such as outbreak severity and personal health conditions.

For those who must travel, several precautions are recommended, including wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, practicing hand hygiene, and considering booster shots. It is particularly advised that vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with underlying health issues, avoid travel. While cases remain mild for many individuals, it is crucial to stay informed and prioritize health and safety during this ongoing pandemic.
