Tesla has no interest in manufacturing electric cars in India: Kumaraswamy

H.D. Kumaraswamy while addressing the press

New Delhi, June 2 (H.S.): Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced that Tesla is interested only in establishing showrooms in India, not in manufacturing cars. In contrast, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen-Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia have shown a desire to manufacture electric vehicles in the country. These comments were made during a press conference to unveil new guidelines aimed at promoting electric car manufacturing in India.

Kumaraswamy emphasized the government’s initiative to attract global manufacturers to enhance India’s status as a manufacturing hub for electric vehicles. With an investment directive of ₹4,150 crore, this plan supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for clean and sustainable growth. The discussions also included industry leaders highlighting their interest in the EV passenger car segment, which is crucial for India’s future in electric mobility. Present at the conference were Secretary Kamran Rizvi and Additional Secretary Dr. Hanifi Qureshi from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
