JAMMU, MAR 8
The pollution level in the entire UT of Jammu & Kashmir are increasing day by day, the J&K UT
administration is also concerned about the rapid increasing in levels of air & water pollution in UT.
The Jammu and Kashmir, often referred to as a paradise on earth, is grappling with a growing
environmental crisis. The picturesque valleys and snow-capped mountains of the Union Territory are facing
a silent threat – air and water pollution. The consequences of this menace are far-reaching, affecting not
only the environment but also the health and well-being of the residents.
Air pollution, in particular, has become a significant concern in Jammu and Kashmir. The rapid increase
in vehicular traffic, Industrial activities, Mining Industry and different construction projects has led to a
surge in particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and other pollutants in the air. The picturesque Dal Lake in
Srinagar, once a symbol of the city’s beauty, is now struggling to survive due to the influx of pollutants
and untreated sewage.
Water pollution is another major issue plaguing the Union Territory. The Jhelum River, which flows through
the heart of Srinagar, is contaminated with industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and domestic waste and
same is the situation of Tawi river in Jammu region. The lack of proper waste management and treatment
facilities has resulted in the degradation of water quality, posing a significant risk to aquatic life and
human health as well.
The impact of air and water pollution on the residents of Jammu and Kashmir is alarming. Respiratory
diseases, such as asthma and bronchitis, are on the reckless rise, while water-borne diseases like diarrhea,
cholera and typhoid etc. are becoming increasingly common. The long-term effects of exposure to pollutants
can be devastating, leading to cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and even cancer. The
implementation of stricter emission norms, the promotion of eco-friendly transportation, and the
establishment of waste management facilities are essential steps towards mitigating air pollution.
On the other hand the J&k Pollution Control Committee is working on very slow pace, as per sources,
the JKPCC is delaying in issuance of (CTO) Consent to Operate Fresh/renewal to the different types of
industries in the UT of J&K and due to this no appropriate inspection and checking of the these industries
is being done, thus, resulting into rapid increasing in levels of air & water pollution in UT. The JKPCC
should immediately take strict action against the officers of their department who are sitting on these files
and reason may also be sough for the delaying in the process.
