Tories Appoint Ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe to Influential Spending Committee

London, 18 October (H.S.): The Conservative Party has appointed Rupert Lowe, the independent Member of Parliament for Great Yarmouth and a former Reform UK representative, to one of its seats on the influential Public Accounts Committee. The committee is a powerful cross-party body that scrutinizes government spending to ensure taxpayer money is spent effectively.

A Conservative Party spokesperson stated that Lowe was selected because he shares our values on cutting waste and that his business experience will help the committee achieve its goals .

The move is seen as part of a wider Conservative strategy to work across party lines in the national interest. Lowe will not be joining the Conservative Party.Lowe was elected as a Reform UK MP in 2024 but was expelled from the party in March 2025 following a public falling-out with leader Nigel Farage . He has since been sitting as an Independent MP.

Lowe expressed that he was delighted with the appointment and promised to ask the awkward questions needed to hold senior public sector figures accountable for how tax money is spent. The Labour Party criticized the decision, with a source stating that the Conservatives, having crashed the economy, were now hand-picking someone with no fiscal credibility for the role.

The appointment is not without precedent; the Conservatives have previously given their committee seats to MPs from other parties, such as Labour defector Rosie Duffield and the DUP’s Sammy Wilson.
