Srinagar, Dec 20 (KINS): Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday issued a detailed traffic plan and advisory for December 21, 2025, cautioning commuters to plan travel judiciously in view of adverse weather predictions.
On National Highway-44 (Jammu–Srinagar NHW), slow traffic movement was observed from 1600 hrs on December 19 to 1600 hrs on December 20 due to single-lane stretches at Balinalla, Dewal, Nashri–Dalwas and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, compounded by the breakdown of two heavy motor vehicles (HMVs).
In light of a forecast issued by the Meteorological Department predicting snowfall and rainfall over the next few days, the Traffic Police advised people to undertake journeys only after confirming road status from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Srinagar, Ramban and Jammu, and to regularly check updates on official J&K Traffic Police social media handles.
Passengers and LMV operators have been advised to prefer day-time travel on the Jammu–Srinagar NHW and avoid night journeys, as the movement of HMVs between Nashri Tunnel and Navyug Tunnel, along with the seasonal migration of nomads from Kashmir towards Jammu, may cause inconvenience. Commuters were also urged to strictly follow lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving often lead to congestion.
Subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, LMVs, passenger vehicles, HPSVs, private cars and HMVs (goods carriers) shall be allowed to ply from both sides on NH-44. Coordination between TCU Jammu, Srinagar and Ramban will determine movement based on real-time road conditions.
On the Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag road (NH-244), only LMVs will be allowed from both sides, subject to fair weather and clearance from NHIDCL. Vehicular movement will be permitted between 1000 hrs and 1500 hrs from PP Parana and PP Daksum.
For the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumari (SSG) Road, traffic will be allowed in a regulated manner after clearance from BRO. LMVs followed by HMVs (up to six tyres) will be allowed from Minamarg towards Srinagar between 0500 hrs and 1000 hrs, and from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 1130 hrs and 1700 hrs. No vehicle will be permitted beyond the cut-off timings. Security Forces convoys have been directed to plan their movement without disturbing civilian traffic.
On the Mughal Road, subject to fair weather and clearance from GREF, LMV passenger vehicles and private cars will be allowed from both sides via Poonch. Movement from Behramgala (Baffliaz) will be permitted between 0600 hrs and 1730 hrs, and from Herpora (Shopian) between 0600 hrs and 1700 hrs, as per the District Magistrate Poonch advisory. However, only six-tyre HMVs will be allowed from Shopian towards Poonch, and no HMV will be permitted from Poonch towards the Mughal Road.
The Traffic Police reiterated that commuters should confirm road status before travel through the designated Traffic Control Units providing multiple helpline numbers for public assistance.(KINS)
