
Washington, July 30(HS): Amid the next round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on India starting August 1.In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, President Trump wrote that India is buying weapons and oil from Russia. Therefore, they will also impose fines on it. In another post, Trump mentioned that India’s trade deficit with the United States is very high, which is why they are imposing tariffs on Indian goods, effective from August 1.President Trump has also announced a punitive measure in the form of a fine on all imported goods from India for importing oil from Russia. This will be in addition to the 25 percent tariff. He stated that the United States has done relatively less trade with India because of its high tariffs. Trump further wrote, Thank you for bringing attention to this matter. Make America Great Again!The American team will visit India on August 25 for the next round of negotiations regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States. In this discussion, removing an additional 26 percent tariff from India’s perspective and easing tariffs on the steel, aluminum, and automobile sectors are priorities. The previous round of discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between the two countries was held in Washington, where India’s chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal and the assistant U.S. trade representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, had detailed discussions.
